Comb twisting is achieved by using a small rat-tailed comb to form coils. This is usually done by a loctician or natural hair stylist, but you can achieve this look on your own with time and patience. Another advantage is that they can be done on very short hair.
Tools Needed: Rat-Tail Comb,
naani's naturals No More Frizzies Aloe Vera Jelly and Styling Gel.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Begin with freshly shampooed and deep conditioned hair. A quality moisturizing shampoo is best. We suggest using a Sulfate-Free or Castile Shampoo instead of shampoos that contain Lauryl Sulfates (most Over The Counter - OTC - shampoos) beacause the lauryls are drying to ethnic hair types. An alternative to the Sulfate-Free and Castile blends available for sale at naani.com would be those that contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate, a milder surfactant when compared to the widely available lauryls.
The idea in the creation of this style is is to form a spiral or coil using the rat-tail end of the comb as an anchor.
Begin by placing a small amount of
Alcohol Free No More Frizzies Aloe Vera Jelly or Styling Gel on the section to be twisted. No More Frizzies Jellies and Gels are alcohol-free. This is important because gels that contain alcohol (most all those available OTC) are very drying to ethnic hair. The alcohol robs our hair of necessary moisture which makes it more susceptible to damage. Be sure to avoid brown, protein gels as these are notorious for their high alcohol content and tendency to promote breakage.
Now that you've placed the jelly or gel on the section, place the comb at the scalp. The comb will act as an anchor. Wind the hair down and around the skinniest end of the rat-tail comb.

When you have finished winding the hair around the rat-tail end of the comb, gently slide the tail end out and voila, your first comb-coil.
Repeat until you have finished your entire head.
Comb-Coil Maintenance
With proper maintenance comb-coils can last up-to 3 weeks when properly cared for. During this time avoid wetting/shampooing as the coils will unravel.
Got itchies? You may cleanse your scalp with
naani's naturals All-Purpose or Witch Hazel Astrigent to help alleviate dirt and odor. The astringents, when used periodically in-between shampoos will help give your scalp a clean feeling without drying it out. Keep in mind that astringents should be used as temporary cleansing agents not replacements for shampoos,
To use the naani's naturals astrigents, get a clean, lint-free towel or cloth wipe. Place some of the astringent on the cloth and gently wipe in-between the parted sections. Repeat until the cloth is no longer picking up dirt/oils.
To preserve this style, sleep with a satin scarf and use
light moisturizing oil sheen/spray to add luster.
Do not wear your coils longer than 6 weeks as doing so would result in encouraging them to dreadlock.
