Zahra Redwood, Miss Jamaica, performs during preliminary judging of the
Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City on May 23. She is the contest's
first Rastafarian and the first to appear in Dreadlocks. Redwood, 25,
says she wants judges to see her as a "Rastafarian promoting the
message of peace, love and unity throughout mankind." -- source msnbc.com
Although dreadlocks and Rastafarianism continues to be shrouded in controversy in Jamaica and throughout much of the world, for the first time in history, crowned its first dreadlocked Rasta "Miss Jamaica."
Miss Redwood serves as an inspiration to young and not so young Black females throughout the Diaspora who through no fault of their own believe that dark-skin, African features, natural Black hair, etc, etc are not beauty ideals.
Although Miss Redwood failed to place in the top 15 during the 2007 pageant, she serves as a trailblazer for those of use who can only hope to be so beautiful and daring.

Are Zahra'z Dreadlocks Real?
You know, I asked the same question until I saw this photo.
It appears as if she either straightened (hot combed or relaxed) her roots during the actual Miss Universe competition or, they're extensions. The photo below show's a bit more natural roots but looking at the others...I'm not quite sure.
You tell us...real or fake? Does it matter? Comment below.

I think Zahra'z locks are real. By looking at the roots one would think the locks are fake. I believe the roots were straightened.

THEY ARE EXTENSIONS! I have soft hair too but and people ask me if mine are real too but no one with dreadlocks has that much loose new growth. Even the photo that you site as real looks like she's cornrowed the extensions in. What a disappointment.

DEF REALl!!!!!! you cannot buy a pack of fake locs especially at that length, that's an american thing where they try to imitate the looks of locs without the sacrifice... the fake ones are like a twist and you can tell they are not locs, plus they are not that long. your new growth can go as far back as you want, mine personally go real far back because i like the option of slicking my locks back similar to the way she has hers.
There is nothing like people being on the outside looking in, don't have a clue, yet making ridiculous comments. One must know that locs is the true style intended for a human beings hair, especially a black person. What style can you have that allows your hair to naturally grow to such astonishing lengths? Hmmm??
People grow your locs, make the sacrifice before you go commenting on what you don't know about, to truly overstand locs, one must grow them and experience them. Rastas are about Naturalness not fakeness, we are proud of our locs, we are proud of our length, but it's not a style, it's a way of lIfe, JAH RASTAFARI!!!

I believe that her hair is real. Her roots probably haven't been straightened. I have locks, too. My roots on the top of my hair looks straight like that too because I rarely ever twists my locks at the root. When you don't twist them regularly at the anchor or base of the lock, the hair appears to be straight when you pull it back taut as Zahra has into a pony tail. My hair looks like hers on the top at the roots. I wear my hair pulled into a pony tail on the top of my head often and people often comment that my hair looks straight on the top.

I believe the locks are real because a Jamaican woman would not try to represent the Rasta in a fake way, that would go against everything they stand for.
Miss Zarah you are beautiful and you represent well! I am proud to see the conciousness of African people raising awareness and love all over the globe and proud to be a part of it too.
One love,
Ali from Cali

Her dreads are beautiful. I have had dreads now for 5 years and I can tell the real from the fake and hers are real. It takes alot of hard work and dedication to get dreads like that, and the only reason her hair is straight at the roots is because she doesnt twist them that often. She is a rasta which means that it's all about natural beauty. Her hair is naturally straight. Dont hate what you dont understand and dont assume, seek the knowledge to know. Big ups!

i have the same hair texure with shorter locks. she probaly doesn't pull in back that often. everyone thought that i had fake hair or a relaxer when i used to wear my hair out. if your dark most stupid people think that you can't have soft shiney hair. wrong. noone bothers me anymore cause my hair is locked and you can't see how wavy it is, unless i pull it up or back, which i don't cause it's too dang heavy. and bottom line who cares shes natural and thats saying love your self so god bless.
