how do you re-wrap new growth after having yarn locks for a while? and does this work for medium length hair?

I'm scared that I'm not grasping the concept of yarn locks. I wanna see how I'd look with dreadlocks, and was going to use yarn locks as a first but I want small uniformed looking locks that are about the diameter of about 4 toothpicks tied together so they aren't huge and don't loc huge. What should I do? And how should I wrap them if I have really fine hair, and in what direction should I hold them to wrap them?
