QUESTION

What are “sororities” and how do they work? (We only see negative things about them over here, usually in horror films and other unrealistic dramatisations)?

Black sororities and fraternities are AWESOME and if i ever had a chance to join I would in a second. I NEVER heard of hazing with black sororities and fraternities only white ones to be honest. They’re usually down south where all the black colleges are and they have they’re own style and everything with their stepping shows. If you ever get to see one you should. It’s worth it.

I am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. There are standards and test to become worthy of membership. There are some organizations who Haze and there are reprocutions for participating in any form of hazing. Membership is by invitation only and for those of us who are members, we appreciate the challenges because it makes use stronger. We also have a large life-time commitment to community service both financially and through service. Unfortunately some are immature and do more than what is required.

To be honest….I think they are pointless…the only value in them is for networking. Besides this, I believe it’s a waste of energy and time. The step shows are always fun to watch, as they are very creative. Also….something that Africans American have in common with (some) Africans…what we call “stepping”. YES, hazing does go on with these black sororities an fraternities, don ‘t be fooled.
My BIGGEST problem with these organizations, in terms of black folk:
Most of the people who get into them do not know the origin of it
Most of the people do not know what it really means, they may know the symbols but not really what they symbolize
Most join because they feel they want to be a part of something..which is great…but you need to fully understand what it is before joining something
