The State of Race Relations in the UK
Generally speaking the majority of white and black people get along and interact with each other very well. Attitudes have changed towards one another considerably during the past thirty years and racial tension is on the decrease. However, there are still some groups of white people who are very racist and unwelcoming and are given some political power by like-minded white people who vote for them.
The National Front was very active in the 70’s and 80’s and now such far right attitudes seem to be taken on by the BNP (British National Party). Although the BNP deny having anything to do with racial violence there is a belief that the BNP is the political arm and the National Front is the violent arm of the same racist animal.
The BNP outwardly oppose “non-white immigration” although, they say, they have nothing against non-whites – they just want to protect the British way of life, which they feel is dying. They believe that if things continue the way they are now, white people will become a minority in every country around the world. They want to put an end to foreign aid and are against mixed relationships.
In contrast to this, there are also groups such as the Anti-Nazi League which consist mainly of white people and Youth Against Racism in Europe who are against organisations such as the BNP and NF. Mainstream political parties dismiss the BNP and see them as inciting racial hatred. At the last general election, all BNP members were banned from making a speech at the counting ceremonies.
Although racism is still evident in this country, the UK is still a relatively safe place for black people to live. Opinions on mixed relationships vary; some UK Blacks feel that black people who have relationships with white people are “sell-outs”, disloyal to the black community. Others feel that black people should be with whoever makes them happy.
Generally speaking, although mixed relationships happen throughout the UK, they are more acceptable to black people where they are in smaller numbers. We do not have segregated universities, schools or colleges and there is no evidence to show that this would be desirable.
UK Blacks do not refer to each other as “nigger” unless they are a certain type of rap music fan or they are intending to insult another black person. Either way, using the term is generally frowned upon here.
Progress of UK Blacks
Famous wealthy black people in the UK tend to be footballers and entertainers. There are, however, many wealthy black people in diverse professions from barristers and property dealers to fashion designers and university professors. Universities and higher education institutions are seeing increasing numbers of black people entering and completing their courses every year.
