The term ‘African-American’ stems from government’s (and some advocates) desires to become “politically correct” as words like ‘black’ and ‘indian’ were seen to be derogatory and culturally insensitive phrases like “African-American” and “Native-American” took hold in the American vernacular. Still, there are number of blacks and many more West Indians who do not like being ‘demographized’ as African-American.

Firstly, because our ancestors come from Africa and there are elements of [various] African cultures reflected in African-American culture.
Secondly, our skin color is not BLACK it is [mostly] brown, yellow, tan, ivory etcetera.
Third, the color black has often been associated with evil and the people who coined the term wanted to divorce the negative connotations of the word from the people.
Most of us do not mind being called black, but African-American is a more precise term to describe black people in America.

Like the person above me mentioned, our culture is laced and mixed with many African elements from foods, traditions, music…I mean, what were you expecting considering that (Africa) is where we orginated from?
